drinking glasses from dishwasher?

How do you get an almost permanent film off of drinking glasses from dishwasher? Almost all of our drinking glasses have formed this almost permanent film from our dishwasher. We have tried a lot of different things with no luck. Are there any tips on how to get this off? Sometimes it is like a whitish-clear film and other times it looks like a rainbowy oil-slick. Any tips would be great!!! Thanks.
