Hej,

3.7.1. Compact Disc

In the case of Compact Discs the ISRCs and other PQ-data are encoded in the disc subcode

(Q channel) in the disc mastering process. For this reason, ISRCs must be encoded

for each track in the Pre-Master for CD. The ISRC codes, together with the Digital Copy

Prohibited flag, and the relevant point of sale code, such as EAN/UPC should be inserted

on the Pre-Master during the pre-mastering process from the original Master.

3.7.2. Mini-Disc

The process for Mini-Disc is very similar to that for Compact Disc.

3.7.3. DVD-Audio

In DVD-Audio, the ISRC is contained in the packet headers of an audio stream and can be

included by authoring systems.

3.7.4. DVD-Video

DVD-Video has a similar structure to DVD-Audio and the ISRC can be added by authoring

systems.

Unfortunately there is no standard method of embedding ISR Codes for video files. The procedure that works the best for me is to use Sorenson Squeeze 5 Pro (Sorenson Media - Squeeze) which can output Flash, QuickTime, Windows Media, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Then enter the ISR Codes in the Description Field (I guess a tag could work too). I then use an FLV metadata viewer to confirm the ISR Code has been embedded.

Since FLV acts as a container for h.264 and Quicktime, I use FLV for most video formats and this allows you to Stream video content off a server or a dedicated streaming service as well as use services such as YouTube and other progressive playback services that use FLV. This way you can use on file for most decent and popular services and embed the ISR Codes in the metadata and the ISR Code will show up.

I have checked with the IFPI and the RIAA and there is no standard for embedding ISR Codes beyond CD/DVD/SACD and mp3. They are however working with software providers for formats other than CD and MP3. So hopefully things will be easier in future. I have suggested that Sorenson Squeeze, Adobe's Flash Authoring, Adobe's Flash Exporter plugin and Apple's Quicktime Pro all should contain a dedicated ISR Code field that will offer a standard way of embedding codes and make life much easier for us non-video folks who occasionally get video requests like this.

In terms of Enhanced CD, the best solution is to use an video authoring application and embed the ISR Code there (or get the video editor to enter it). When you include that on the CD it should retain the ISR Code. You can always use something like a Mac OS application called Metadata Hootenanny (Download Metadata Hootenanny 1.2 for Mac - Metadata Hootenanny is a viewer/editor for metadata in QT movies - Softpedia) which can read the metadata in Quicktime files and see if it is embedded correctly.

ISRC codes can be added to DVDs using DVDAfteredit.

I am seeing more "repurposing" of audio (and video) here too. A few clients are starting to ask for uploading to YouTube, setting up of streaming servers (Darwin streaming server saves me here and is open sourced and basically the same as Quicktime streaming server and pretty quick and easy to set up on Windows and Linux boxes - Open Source - Server - Streaming Server) or add content to streaming services with all of the ISR Codes in place. Requirements are moving way beyond just audio. I feel your pain.

In terms of the "look" of the codes in the Description Field I simply just enter it as I would in any authoring application, that is without the ISRC bit. Some services require or accept a text file that can accompany the video file and here I add the ISR Code and Track Info (such as artist and song title) just to cover all possible questions and issues.

Beyond the ISRC Handbook there is no other handbook or guide that details a standard method for adding ISR Codes to video files. The ISRC Handbook mentions video but it only covers CD, DVD, SACD and mp3. For this reason I have suggested the IFPI recommend to software developers (such as Sorenson, Adobe and Apple) that they add an ISRC field in their application and formatting plugins to allow for some kind of standard input method. This way it is easy for us to enter the information and be done with it, instead of us fumbling around trying to find a workable solution for online video containing an audio soundtrack.
